Food production (often aided by slaves in some households) Typical work performed by men was outdoors. Farming and purchasing of goods from market (not uncommon in poor families that women would go to the market) Women washed the body, anointed it with oil, placed it on bed covered in a special garment. Family held vigil, women would sing lament, tear their hair, rend their cheeks. Body transported, accompanied by music of the aulos, to burial spot before dawn. Proper burial essential for entry to the underworld and not polluting the city-state. Only sparta buried the dead within the city walls. Sometimes buried with items/possessions: greek economy. Priority was maintaining nutritional needs of population. Farmers grew crops to feed the family and sell for purchase of materials/seed to grow for next harvest.
