Document Summary
Day 3: california as an island literal and figurative. Is there anything exceptional (truly different) about ca and how has. California actually was an island as far as people knew. This was the latest knowledge about the west coast from the 1520s to the early 1700s. It was originally an island because they mapped out baja california (courtesy of cort s) Named this because of the story of queen califia"s. Other sailors hear about this place and are curious and want to see the amazons and meet queen califia so they go there. It"s not going to be until the late 1600s or the early 1700s that we no longer see. California as an island on maps because people start exploring more and cartographers are changing their maps. There"s this whole fantasy element in old maps. People know that there"s something exceptional about this place.
