Lecture 16: Intelligence and Special Education (Chapter 5)
Intelligence
● Consider a “construct” / can’t be measure directly
○ We look at different aspects to try to measure intelligence but there is not a
universal standard of measuring intelligence
■ ex) we test how fast someone can recognize pattern, decipher a
metaphor, perform procedural math problems, … etc.
○ Although we have different tests to measure intelligence these test are all
missing the “whole” idea
● Is adaptive
● Is related to learning ability
○ We think that it is related to academic concepts but is it really?
● Involves use of prior knowledge
● Involves many different mental processes
● Is culture specific
○ Different culture value intelligence differently
○ Western (USA) sees intelligence as doing well in school
● Key Definition
○ Individual differences
■ Variability in abilities and characteristics among individuals
● Intelligence, temperament
○ Students with special needs
■ Different enough from peers to require specially adapted materials and
practice
Spearman Intelligence Theory
● Single, pervasive reasoning ability
● Multiple specific factor
Cattell
● Fluid intelligence = how quickly you can recognize pattern, information, change from one
subject to the next
○ ex) SAT tests fluid intelligence because we get 25 minutes to take a math
portion, switch to reading for 25 minutes and back to math
○ Peak of fluid intelligence is usually around the age of 25, after 25 years old the
knowledge becomes crystallized
● Crystallized intelligence
○ Storage knowledge
○ Scope of knowledge with depth of info
○ Depth of knowledge
■ AKA wisdom
