The ess that studies the whole earth as a system of many interacting. A system is an isolated portion of the universe under consideration. A closed system means there"s no energy moving in or out. What"s inside stays inside and nothing comes in. No matter can enter only energy can enter. We mine some gases and once they are released we cannot trap them or catch them. Once a gas is released, it cannot be captured or retrieved. Satellites leave earth but meteors come into the earth. Residence time = amount inside reservoir/ total resources or sinks. Reservoirs amount of a material interest in a given form. Flux- the amount of material added to (source) or removed from (sink) reservoir, in a given period of time. No net change in the amount of material. Ice sheets will melt, just not now or very soon. Energy is the ability to do work, to move matter.
