EARTHSS 17 Lecture 5: Earthquakes 2
Document Summary
Compare and contrast the 3 boundary types. Draw profiles (from lithosphere down into the mantle) of the interactions between plates at the three boundary types. You have one type of oceanic crust and it is going to subduct: continental-continental convergence. In this case our himalayas were formed with a continental-continental collision. When you have a continent to continent convergence those two plates meet and there is really no density difference. When the plates meet neither subducts and we get this big collision. Eventually this lithosphere will break off and the pulling force will be restored. You don"t get volcanos because you will get very deep roots. The roots in like the himalayas are too deep for any volcanic activity to occur. 71 million years ago india was out in the middle of the ocean. This huge mountain range has occurred because these mountains were created. The himalayas: result of a recent continental collision.
