Here we have myth of a mother who is separated from daughter. Demeter is associated with mother (meter) = mother earth. Others she is connected to dais = food; and derivatively, barely. Power of earth is to stop giving us nourishment when mad. Demeter and zeus have a daughter, persephone. Torch is because she is looking for her daughter. Imposible to think of her without thinking about daughter.
