Speaking in the public sphere - white public space : latinos judged harshly in public sphere, expected to produce unaccented english, face radicalized stigmatization if their accents are strong. White people free to speak however they like. Switching into spanish is acceptable unless you"re a spanish speaker. Requires that one understand links between forms used and negative connotations they evoke. Folk theory of racism - the idea that racism is reduced to an individual"s beliefs, intentions, and actions; that is, in order to be a racist one must intentionally talk and act like a racist. If i use mock spanish and don"t mean to be a racist, i can"t be a racist this is ampli ed, perpetuated, and validated by news media.
