The anglo american story- baby talk emphasis on 2-party communication child held facing caregiver child treated as convo partner. The kaluli story: no overt social strati cation, rely on verbal interactions and traditionally non literate, mother primary caregiver of child, child typically held facing outward. !1: child not treated as conversational partner - they are taiyo (soft) and are pitied bc they can"t take care of themselves - they have no understanding . Highly strati ed society - titled (chie y) or untitled - affects ranking of caregivers. Mother primary caregiver for a while but helped out by other caregivers - usually untitled. Child often held by older siblings; usually on the hip. When baby talked to, in rhythmic sounds not words.
