Document Summary
Some think it"s an illusion, some think it"s traits, some think it"s traits & values, some emphasize development etc. Would think - using self report questionnaires to describe abstract traits in the absence of motives & values would be a completely useless exercise . Depth psychology - how your personality has shaped as you have been navigating the challenges in life. Psychoanalytic - tension between wanting something and the social pressure of also being polite. Can make up reasons for why you did something. Sometimes biology goes wrong which causes dysfunction. Goal - figure out why some people have certain types of problems, put them in groups, figure out dysfunction in first place, then could maybe generate treatment directly. Ex: bacterial infection, give half antibiotics & half not, observe. He sees personality on surface (unlike freud) Factor analysis & the five factor model. Can go from broad to more specific. Machiavellianism - willing to do whatever it takes to win.
