Feelings of emotions: emotion- positive or negative reactions to particular situations, positive = caring for offspring, sexual behavior, food and water ingestion, negative = fear, anger. Lateral hypothalamus- sympathetic activation, increased blood pressure and heart rate, paleness (autonomic components: periaqueductal gray matter- behavioral arrest (freezing) (behavioral components, paraventricular nucleus- acth, glucocorticoid secretion (hormone components) Fear responses can be innate: predators, social stress. Impairments in learning and memory: acceleration of aging related cognitive decline, enhanced susceptibility of hippocampal neurons to atrophy in response to metabolic changes.
