POL 140D Lecture 14: POL 140D Sept1
Document Summary
President term, amendment limiting the number of times you could be elected to the presidency. Arguments for politicians serve too long and get out of touch: reelection rates often in the high 90% they create cozy relationships with special interests incumbents have so many advantages that elections become uncompetitive. Part of the reason politicians serve a long time is because they represent local interests: they are doing good at their job. Tl take away voter" right to choose, if people want to vote for someone doing a good job but they can no longer be reelected. Gives executive branch (bureaucrats & governor) and special interests too much power. Constant turnover weakens legislature and becomes relative to executive. Biggest check on behavior is reelection: tl create lame ducks. Leads to inexperienced legislators- legislating is hard, inexperienced people trying to pass legislative will be a lot harder for them to work together- weakens cooperative ability.
