Presidential approval: some basic variables affecting the presidential vote choice can also affect presidential approval. We had more republicans and independents until 2012. After 2012 there was a decrease in independents. But other variables come into play as well. (3 themes of the class) Tendency for people to evaluate public figures in positive directions (basis for honeymoon effect ) Overall during election the popular vote is lower than the 1st post-inaugural poll. During the 2 months the president grows on people. ) Rallies, public support, and times of crisis, or major international event influence presidential approval. People grade president on non-presidential rhetoric and actions intersecting with issues they care about. Role of other political actors on presidential approval. Going public. the president takes his policy message to the government, and he takes it to the public. Information control the president tries to control what information the public receives and does not receive. (timing of information released matters)
