Orophayryngeal stage moves bolus through pharynx and into esophageus. During this time, food must be prevented from: re-entering the mouth. Esophageal stage peristaltic waves move bolus into stomach. The stomach is a j shaped chamber located between the esophagus and the small intestine. It can be divided into 3 section: fundus located above the gastroesophageal sphincter, body the middle portion, antrum bottom portion, thick layer of smooth muscle, connected to small intestine by the pyloric sphincter. Functions: store, gastric secretion, converts pulverized food to chime. Gastric filling gastric volume can expand.
