Can"t pass legislation that says men and women should do equal housework--must transform ideas. Altered perceptions of sexual violence and consent, ideas about abortion, media portrayals of women. Takes place at an interpersonal, private level that requires individual"s view rather than changing laws. Pushed feminism further to the left overall. The movement involved sncc, mostly white women in sds. Sds: women were heavily involved in many different issues, vietnam protests, ucb free speech movement. Women (both white and black) did women"s work -- secretaries, fetching coffee, support staff. Involved in a movement centered on equality, yet being treated unequally. Sexual tension -- women would show how liberal they were by having sex with men outside of marriage, yet the double standard and negative connotation remained. Contradictions started to come to a head in 1965-67.
