Carnegie"s wife helped give out all of the money he donated. Women in the late 19th century were experiencing changes in opportunity. College was still only for the elite. In 1870, only 1% of americans went to college, but 21% of that. By 1910, 5% of the us was college educated, and 40% of the 5% were women. Some of these women were unfulfilled with this being their only avenue after college. The other 50% who do get married marry much later than those who do not have a college education, and they have fewer children. People (haters) claimed these women were rejecting their biologically mandated role, and committing race suicide. Women were often barred from professions at this time, like doctors, lawyers, accountants. Women were welcomed in professions that were closely related to their natural role as mothers. Women developed the field of social work.
