Humans are adapted for unique social cognition. 9 -12 months: joint attention + intention. Intentionality around 1 year is the really important step. Social skill, requiring ability to interpret & understand feelings, intentions, & mental states. The most fundamental cognitive skills are those involved in understanding others. Unlike other animals, humans deal with psychological states. Allows us to use cultural artifacts & tools, like language. Ability shows up very, very early in lifespan. Premack and woodruff: does the chimpanzee have a theory of mind? . 3 experiments w/ 14 year old wild-born chimpanzee (sarah) Videos of humans trying to solve problems, correct outcome on. Only one incorrect solution in a more complicated problem set. Help a trainer (liked vs. unliked): good outcome every time for preferred trainer, bad outcome 6 of 8 times for disliked trainer.
