CMN 3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Jargon, Verbal (Rapper), Communication Apprehension
WEEK 7: EFFECTIVE PRESENTATION
• Sharing Science Info Ted Talk
o go into detail when trying to explain something, do not try to be vague
o avoid jargon, it blocks the rest of people from understanding your ideas
o use example stories and experiences to help explain things and attract more
interest
o don’t use bullet points when trying to present something
o use more pictures to communicate scientific ideas
o just use a simple, key sentence that the audience can understand and provide
visuals
o (Science- (jargon + bullets)/ Relevance) x Passion = Understanding
• Nancy Duarte: Video 2
o if you have an idea, share it
o communication is super important when trying to share ideas bc of the way it is
communicated
o the way that ideas are conveyed most effectively is through story bc people can
remember better
o story can pull out physical reactions, presentations are completely flat
o Aristotle had a 3 act structure: beginning (Act 1), middle (act 2), and end (act 3)
o role of a presenter is to be the mentor
▪ help audience move from one thing and into your new special idea using
the power of story
o Freytag Dramatic story structure: Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Falling
Action, and Denouement
▪ denouement: the unraveling or resolution of the story
o a good presentation needs to introduce the past problem and introduce a better
future solution
▪ show the steps on how you plan on reaching the goal for the rest of the
presentation
o move back and forth between what is and what could be
o last turning point is a call-to-action which every presentation should have
o at the very end, you have to show that with your new idea, the world is a new
bliss
o use words and examples that the audience can relate to
• Nancy Duarte: How to Tell a Story
o humans are wired to enjoy transitions
o power of a great story is how it connects us and makes us feel
o stories help inspire people to change as well
o storytelling can lead to better connections and relationships for business
▪ through emotional connections from stories

audience
