Culture - a learned system of meanings that fosters a particular sense of shared identity-hood & community-hood among its group members. Also can consider culture as our frame of reference. It can include our traditions, beliefs, values, norms, symbols, attitudes. Ex: wedding dress (is symbolic piece of clothing) Culture is not meant to pigeon - hole anyone. It just represents general commonalities people have in a culture/community. Need to be a part of the culture to understand certain aspects of language. Families w/ similar ses may come together. Religion can be part of someone"s culture. Culture can e a part of people"s identity. A culture that exists within a mainstream cultural heritage. Aka a subgroup of a dominant culture. Ex: being from the west coast, being a californian, being asian- These are subgroups of being an american. Some cultures are ok with more self - disclosure.
