BIS 2C Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Oomycete, Heterotroph, Rhizaria
Document Summary
All plastids are derived from single endosymbiotic event. Symbiont is from bacterial phylum - cyanobacteria. The plantae lineage: all organisms w/ chloroplasts. Primary endosymbiosis: eukaryote + bacteria = new eukaryote. Secondary endosymbiosis: eukaryote engulfing eukaryote that already had primary symbiosis. Host eukaryote partnering w/ another eukaryote that already had primary symbiosis. Mitochondrion & chloroplast of endosymbiont no longer present. Flagellum is single & posterior, if present. Characterized by presence of small sacs (alveoli) beneath plasma membrane surface. Most have plastic acquired via secondary endosymbiosis. Mixture of pigments give them a golden brown color. Two flagella, one in an equatorial groove, the other in a longitudinal groove. Some are endosymbionts in corals, other invertebrates, microbial eukaryotes. Internal parasites of animals, use apical complex to enter host cells. Still have plastid, but no longer do photosynthesis (apicoplast = chloroplast remnant) Complex life cycles, often with two different hosts. Ex: malaria, toxoplasma (change behavior of some hosts)
