BIS 2C Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Oomycete, Plant, Multinucleate
Document Summary
Eukaryote engulfing a eukaryote that already had a primary symbiosis. Mitochondria (proteobacteria) and chloroplasts (cyanobacteria) are examples of this. Eukaryotes engulfing a bacteria creating a new eukaryote. Tertiary and even higher endosymbioses have occured. Scientists sometimes look for how many membranes or genomes are present to try to determine what kind of endosymbiosis has occurred (primary, secondary, tertiary etc. ) Flagellum is single and posterior if present. Characterized by presence of small sacs (alveoli) beneath membrane. Have two flagella one in an equatorial and the other in a longitudinal groove. Mixture of pigments give them a dolgen brown color. Some are endosymbionts in corals and other invertebrates and microbial eukaryotes. Coral bleaching is the loss of dinoflagellates. They are known for red tides (a bloom) which can produce toxins. When they are in large numbers, marine life like shellfish may eat them, and then when we eat the marine life, it can make us sick.
