Social role is a set of norms that characterizes how people in a given social position ought to behave. Assigned some people to be guards, some to be prisoners in a prison. Understand its 3 types of social influences and other factors affecting conformity: Social loafing is when people expend less individual effort when working in a group then when working alone. More likely to occur when a person displays low motivation for success, a person expects that other group members will display high effort. Tendency for group discussions to focus on information that all members share. When a group of like-minded people discusses a(cid:374) issue, the (cid:862)a(cid:448)e(cid:396)age(cid:863) opi(cid:374)io(cid:374) of g(cid:396)oup members tends to become more extreme. Understand the 4 key features (symptoms) of groupthink. The tendency of group members to suspend critical thinking because they are striving to seek agreement (usually derives from pressure). Obedience is the tendency to do what powerful people tell us to do.
