High comorbidity (things that can occur together) involving anxiety + mood disorders. Depression *** chart 4 (categories of symptoms: many feel temporary depression due to sad/traumatic event, major depression intense depressed state leaving person unable to function effectively. Anhedonia marked lack of pleasure/don"t want to do things you used to like doing: dysthymia less intense form of depression w/ less dramatic effects. No suicidal thoughts: double depression when you have both types of depression. Bipolar disorder depression alternating with periods of mania. Mania highly excited mood + behavior: general euphoria, failure to consider negative consequences, hyperactive/frantic, irritable, rapid speech, less need for sleep. Season affective disorder (sad) depressive episodes displaying seasonal pattern: commonly in fall/winter, improving in spring/summer, symptoms weight gain, lack of energy, excessive sleep. Prevalence of mood disorders: 1 in 5 americans have a depressed episode at some point, more common in women. Mood disorder episodes: initial episodes last 5-10 months w/o treatment, patterns.
