Consciousness moment-to-moment awareness of ourselves and the environment: subjective and private, dynamic, self-reflective (who we are, linked to selective attention. What people tell you: behavioral measures. Example: exam scores, how people act: physiological measures. Freudian viewpoint: conscious mind, preconscious: can be easily recalled, unconscious: cannot be brought into conscious in ordinary circumstances. Cognitive viewpoint: controlled processing you have to be focused on it. Example: first learning to tie your shoes: automatic (unconscious) processing.
