Interpretation of the language of the law is at the center of the legal system. Without the backing of the executive and legislative branch the judicial branch does not have much power. Supreme court justices are nominated by the president and then approved by senate. It is the senate"s job because they are not subject to political whims. Resignation, death, or impeachment are the only ways to be removed from of ce. They may have to recuse themselves if they have a con ict of interest. Ex: if a justice has invested in a company than they may have a con ict of interest no matter how they decide. Supreme court receives many more cases than they actually see (1000 something sent to the supreme court vs. around 100 heard) If they reject the case it means the lower court ruling stands. They accept cases in which there is a question of constitutionality.
