Political parties are something that were created to outlast the individual candidates so that people would know who to vote for. The way a party survives is that it represents the people, as the values and lives of voters change, the parties must appeal to the electorate. Parties must appeal to more groups, they look at groups that are likely to change their party stance. If there are too many views trying to be represented then the party will become fractured because there are large difference in views. The new deal caused huge changes to happen. Prior the democratic party was almost exclusively rich people, but it shifted to represent lower classes more. The republican party moved from their blue collar roots to a more wealthy electorate.
