POL S 202 Lecture 15: Political Parties and Interest Groups
Document Summary
Political parties and interest groups: e. schattschneider. American"s are proud of the democracy that they have built but not many people vote in elections so many people are not participating. People only play a role when they start to get emotional about the issues at hand. Public opinion is a reserve force that doesn"t go in to action until people are in crisis mode. The role of the major parties is to bring in a larger amount of the electorate to vote. If they are diversi ed too fast then they run the risk of not being able to move forward with any of their initiatives. Rise of political parties = increased access to voting for americans (249) The struggle is no longer about the right to vote but about the organization of politics (250) The parties are no longer ghting over new groups of voters, thus they are competing for power with businesses outside of the government.
