Breastfeeding preterm infants: usually must be expressed and fed to babies, fortification of breast milk may be necessary, calcium, sodium, protein, sometimes intravenous nutrition support is the only option. Infant growth and development: rapid growth rate, weight doubles by 4-6 months of age, weight triples by 1 year, growth is indicator of nutritional status, length, weight, head circumference. Infant nutritional needs: human milk or formula for first year, supplemented with solid food at 6 months of age, high energy needs, high protein needs, some specific vitamin and mineral needs. Complementary foods: 4-6 months, gi tract and kidneys are maturing. Iron stores are dwindling: caloric needs increasing. Infant cues: physical ability, disappearance of extrusion reflex (tongue pushing things out of mouth, develop pincer grasp, head and neck control, can sit up with support, other cues, high interest what"s on other people"s plates.
