Definitions
Disordered eating = variety of abnormal or atypical eating behaviors used to reduce weight or
maintain weight loss
Eating disorder = Condition characterized by extreme emotions, attitudes, and behaviors
surrounding body image and food
Anorexia nervosa
Bulimia nervosa
About 13 million people in the US struggle with eating disorders.
Approximately 90% are females between the ages of 15 and 35
1 in 5 women struggle with disordered eating or eating disorders
10 to 20% of female college students to as high as 12 to 15% for females in medical
and graduate schools.
4-10% of male college students
Multiple factors contribute to eating behaviors and can also contribute to the development of
an eating disorder:
-unrealistic media images
-sociocultural values
-family environment
-personality traits
-genetic factors
-excess availability of high fat/sugar food
Body Image:
-abundance of food coupled with emphasis on slimness

Anorexia Nervosa

Individuals assume that everyting will change
once they reach their goal weight, which
continuously decreases.
Being thin and not eating-interpreted as true
signs of power and success
-a medical disorder
--unhealthful behaviors are used to
maintain a body weight less than 85%
of expected weight
--90-95% are young girls and women
--0.5-1% of US females will develop
anorexia
--5-20% of females with anorexia will die
from complications within 10 years
of diagnosis

o Distortion of body image
--the way of a person perceives their body size shape or overall appearance
o Obsession with body size
o Pre-occupation with dieting
and thinness
o Refusal to eat enough food
to maintain a minimally
normal body weight
Symptoms
Extremely restrictive eating practices
