• Explain the concepts of nutrient density and energy density
• Discuss MyPlate as a tool that can assist in designing a healthy diet.
• Dissect a Nutrition Facts panel. How can you use all of that information to help you make good food
choices?
Healthful Diet: A healthful diet proves the proper combination of energy and nutrients
Adequate – enough energy, nutrients, fiber and fluids, to support health and wellness
Moderate – the right amounts of foods to maintain a healthful weight
• Pay attention to what you are eating
• Be aware of portion sizes
• Moderate, not eliminate
Balanced – the proper proportions of nutrients
• Not overconsuming any one food
• Eat foods from the major good groups
Varied – different foods from different food groups/categories
• Not eatig the sae old thig
• Choose a number of different foods within any given food group
• Ensures the diet contains sufficient nutrients
Nutrient Density – ratio of nutrients to energy—weight of nutrients/calories—want it to be high
Energy density – ratio of energy to weight or volume of a food—calories/weight or volume of food—
sometimes want it to be low, sometimes high
Generally, as water content of food increases, energy density decreases; when fat content of a food
increases, energy density increases
