New orleans jazz: primary characteristics, focus on collective improvisation instead of solo improvisation, contrapuntal: two or more independent melodic lines, creation of melodic counterpoint, high melody = clarinet, primary melody = cornet or trumpet. Low melody = trombone: strong rhythmic connection to the 4-beat feel of the blues, drummers executing swinging march patterns based on a 4-beat instead of 2-beat or ragtime feel. Horse whinnies: rooster crowing, very little spontaneous improvising. Individual parts were worked out ahead of time: rhythmically rooted in the two-beat feel of ragtime. Sounds more like parade music to me: still very successful initially b/c first contact to jazz for some people around the world but faded away once there were recordings for black musicians later on.
