Document Summary

Overview: the first jazz recordings, new orleans style, louis armstrong, sidney bechet, chicago style, bix beiderbecke, new orleans stride piano and jelly roll morton, harlem stride pianists, boogie woogie, art tatum. New orleans jazz: primary characteristics, focus on collective improvisation instead of solo improvisation, contrapuntal: two or more independent melodic lines, creation of melodic counterpoint, high melody = clarinet, primary melody = cornet or trumpet. Low melody = trombone: strong rhythmic connection to the 4-beat feel of the blues, drummers executing swinging march patterns based on a 4-beat instead of 2-beat or ragtime feel. Horse whinnies: rooster crowing, very little spontaneous improvising. Individual parts were worked out ahead of time: rhythmically rooted in the two-beat feel of ragtime.
