If you want undivided devotion to jesus christ, don"t get married. God will take care of you, don"t worry about saving for the greedy. Idea that you can give it all up and god will take care of you. Being a christian was a sacrifice jobs you couldn"t take, things you couldn"t do, etc. and worry about persecution. Goal was to free yourself from being a slave to your passions. 313: constantine supports christianity therefore asceticism loses popularity among the majority. At top: strict followers of the faith; ascetics become new class to replace martyrs; above and beyond the average joe; called by god to a higher level. The rest: church becomes more worldly; asceticism loses its appeal. Book written by st. anthanasius which popularized monatscism.
