HSTAA 301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Slavery In Africa, Indentured Servant, Social Stratification
Document Summary
Labor systems: indentured labor, indian slaves, and the african slave. Social hierarchy of subordinates transported over to the colonies. Prior to 1776: 72% came as bound laborers. No: colonial america largely an offshoot of english society (slide #3 immigration statistics) Labor at center of colonial development: labor needs dictate dependency. Increase in indentured servants from ireland & scotland (less from england) Compare to england: too little work for too many people. Turning to indentured labor eventually to slavery. Slavery not economically feasible versus indentured slavery until later in the century. Lifespan was short (<5 years in chesapeake bay) 20-30 for a slave, versus 15 for an indentured servant + passage/maintenance/upkeep. Indenture was a way to pay for passage ( 6 year"s wages for housemaid/footman) No other way to get to the colonies. Received freedom dues at the end from their master. Wards of the state/church poor laws : legal process of movement.
