Villages (and homes) had people from all ranks: haw"iih heads of family units based on birthright, maschimes commoners who could raise their status through mastering skills, kohl slaves who were captives during warfare. Significance of the whale hunt: provides an enormous amount of food, especially in the spring when food stocks were depleted. It brought a sense of prestige, respect, and physical wealth.
