Makah social organization: makah, (cid:862)ge(cid:374)erous (cid:449)ith food(cid:863) Both groups lived in small, kin-related village groups that centered on their haw"iih and their ushtakimilh (lineage group, family members) Everyone worked together for the good of the haw"iih and the good of their house members, ushtakimilh. Social organization was based on rank and prestige system. Villages (and homes) had people from all ranks: haw"iih heads of family units based on birthright, maschimes commoners who could raise their status through mastering skills, kohl slaves who were captives during warfare. Significance of the whale hunt: provides an enormous amount of food, especially in the spring when food stocks were depleted. It brought a sense of prestige, respect, and physical wealth.
