EXP 4680C Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Lexical Decision Task, Semantic Network, Predictive Power
Document Summary
Our understanding of knowledge is influenced by the work of computer scientist investigating artificial intelligence: goal is to develop computers that behave in an intelligent manner, programs should be able to use knowledge to complete everyday task. Organization of concept properties: cognitive economy, assumes network was arranged in a hierarchical manner. Lower level nodes inherited the properties of the higher level nodes. Priming: lexical decision task, a string of letters is presented to the subject. The string may or may not form a word. The subjects task is to respond as quickly as possible yes if the string is a word or no if it is not: objects that are related prime each other. The word bread primes for the word wheat thus response would be faster. It takes the semantic network a long time to determine if something is not true: activation needs to spread through the whole network to determine if something is not true.
