Manic episode: distinct period of abnormally and persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and abnormally and persistently increased goal-directed activity or energy for at least a week. Three or more symptoms of the seven listed must be present. More talkative than usual or pressure to keep talking. Flight of ideas or subjective experience that thoughts are racing. Increase in goal-directed activity or psychomotor agitation. Excessive involvement in activities that have a high potential for painful consequences. Episode is not attributable to the physiological effects of a substance or to another medical condition. Bipolar disorder entails cycling between depressive episodes and manic episodes. Bipolar used to be called manic depression. I: cycling between manic and depressed episodes. Ii: cycling between hypomanic episodes (instead of full mania) and depressed episodes. Not severe enough to cause marked impairment and only has to last 4 days, not a week.
