PSY 181 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Bobo Doll Experiment, Operant Conditioning, Cognitive Revolution
Document Summary
Bandura critiqued the idea of operant conditioning and was responsible for the cognitive revolution in psychology. Modeling/vicarious learning: bobo doll experiment, in which children were more likely to act aggressively after acting an adult behaving aggressively against a doll. People don"t need to be directly reinforced for learning to occur . they can learn just by observing and modeling the behavior of others. This went against behavioral theory (which assumes that learning occurs through environmental reinforcement of behavior) Motivation is rooted into two types of beliefs: Contingency beliefs: belief that a desired outcome is dependent on your behavior. Self-efficacy beliefs: belief that you can perform the behaviors necessary to obtain desired outcomes. Triadic reciprocal determinism: it"s not just the environment that controls behavior. There"s a reciprocal, causal relationship between the person, the behavior, and the environment. Therapist must foster knowledge in client of behaviors that lead to desired outcomes (foster contingency beliefs) Optimal challenges: key for maintenance and enhancement of well-being.
