The ego is the gatekeeper and coordinator of consciousness, and it mediates between the collective unconscious and the self, and/or between the external world and the self. The ego varies in type (introvert/extrovert) and function (predominant thinking, feeling, intuitive, or sensing function) The persona is the mask that we wear and show outwardly to others. The persona naturally conforms to social attitudes and standards. It is a threat to the psyche to stand out too much from the crowd, so the persona allows us to conform. The persona mediates between the ego and the external world. The persona is the vehicle by which our ego comes into contact with the external world. The shadow is the polar opposite of the persona.
