See parents as authoritarian or permissive, (rarely authoritative) Mothers: see self as authoritative (rarely authoritarian, or permissive), see self as rarely over- restrictive, warm but firm. Couple system is the foundation of the family system. Quality of couple relationship can facilitate or hinder social and emotional development. Emotional and physical support, when able to provide this to each other, likelier to provide this to their children. More affectionate, responsive, and positive relationships are likely. What matters most is how you have the conflict, and the way it is resolve, the way parents deal with arguments. How we fight and the way we deal with it matters. Intense fights: hostile manner, screaming, physical violence, aggressive. Children learn how to resolve conflicts in their own lives. If disagreement is handled with respect, and mutual understanding, warmth, support, negotiation, and conflict resolution - harmful effects are lessened.
