Document Summary
Some intense, some mild (rage vs. sadness, euphoria vs. contentment: differ in valence - some are pleasant, some unpleasant. Some motivate to take action, others do not: three agreed-upon characteristics. Internal physiological arousal - all emotions experienced internally and change our physiological state. Expressive behavior in the face and body - nonverbal behavior. All emotions involve some form of cognitive appraisal - try to identify the cause of emotion. Pleasant emotions - cortical activity in left hemisphere: unpleasant emotions - cortical activity in right hemisphere. People all over the world can reliably identify six basic emotions in facial expressions of others: carroll izard et al. These six emotions are innate - babies make faces that are related to emotions and adults can recognize them in children: happiness, surprise, fear, sadness, anger, disgust, [interest] Thus, facial expression can evoke and magnify certain emotions.
