PSY 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Long-Term Memory, Semantic Network, Hierarchical Organization
Document Summary
Recognition that humans as a species is distinct for our cognitive abilities. Ex: invent the wheel, kept historical records to guide future generations, land spaceships on the moon/etc. , mystery of the atom, crack genetic code. Wreak havoc, war, discriminate, mistreat those we love, throw away $ on chance, take drugs that make us sick & dependent. Refer to mental groupings similar places, ideas, people, events, objects. Purpose of concepts is to simplify info in long-term memory. Stored in long-term memory organized in hierarchical way (how we store concepts in long-term memory is built one upon the other) Priming (when one concept in semantic network is activated, other closely related concepts seem to pop into mind) Present 2 pairs of letter strings on a screen ask to determine whether both pairs of letter strings form words. Participants were quickest to determine if pairs were words if pairs of letter strings were semantically related.
