Grammatical gender: a marking that denotes the gender of a noun. Russian and german - masculine, neuter, and feminine. Also similarity judgment task: you judge which of the two words are similar. So italian: no effect on grammatical gender on judgment in non-animal words. Found effect of grammatical gender on judgment in animal words -> words with same grammatical gender - judged as similar. German: no effect in both animal and non-animal words. Piaget proposed that children proceed through four stages based on maturation and experience children are active learners who construct knowledge from their environments and they learn through assimilation and accommodation and complex cognitive development occurs through equilibration. Interaction w/ physical and social environment is key for cognitive development ; development occurs in stages. Vygotsky proposed that speech is a major psychological tool in the children"s development of thinking. As they age and develop, their basic speech becomes more complex. Speech becomes connected to thought at ~3yr old.
