Degree of constriction in the vocal tract. Phonetic describes the acoustic detail of speech sound such as physical property and how they"re articulated while phonology describes the sound categories each language uses to divide up the space of possible sounds. Phoneme (/a/) - abstract unit, underlying form of sound realization, contrast meanings. Phone ([a]) - actual speech sound ; a phone = an allophone of a phoneme. Allophones- different phones that are understood as the same phoneme. P in english is an allophone b/c it doesn"t make changes to meaning whether it"s aspirated or unaspirated. Two words differing just by one sound. Onset (an initial consonant/cluster), rime (nucleus-central vowel, and coda-final consonants) Design features of language (hockett 1960) : an attempt to define language, emphasis on spoken language, may be used as a set of criteria to compare human language & animal communication. Vocal-auditory channel: transmission of speech signal from speaker to hearer.
