BCS 151 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Neurophysiology
Document Summary
Lecture 13: suppressive neural mechanism: perception to intelligence. You present different stimuli sizes to the neurons to track their neurophysiology: a key element in neurophysiology studies, the neuron would shut down for larger stimuli sizes. It is easier to see large contrast objects than smaller: but for neurophysiology, that is not the case, moving stimulus: used to see the effect size of things that are barely visible and then those highly visible. Low contrast: big is better: aka spatial summation . High contrast: small is better: aka spatial suppression , suppression is a canonical mechanism. The different contrast preferences are for the same neuron at different contrast levels. Findings were generalized over many stimuli and methods. Not to 2nd order and isoluminant motion: this does not matter because mt is not used in these particular motions, similar results in other aspects of visual motion (e. g. binocular rivalry)
