BCS 110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Secondary Somatosensory Cortex, Ventral Posterior Nucleus, Medial Lemniscus

20 views3 pages

Document Summary

Dorsal-column medial lemniscus: mainly touch and muscles/joints. First synapse in the dorsal column nuclei of the medulla. The sensory neurons enter the spinal cord via a dorsal root, ascend ipsilaterally in the dorsal columns and synapse in the dorsal column nuclei of the medulla. The axons of dorsal column nuclei neurons decussate (cross the midline - medial lemniscus fibers) and ascend in the medial lemniscus to the contralateral ventral posterior nucleus (vpn) of the thalamus. The vpn receive input via the three branches of the trigeminal nerve that carry somatosensory info from the contralateral area of the face. Most neurons of the vpn project to the primary somatosensory cortex and others to the secondary somatosensory cortex/ the posterior parietal cortex. Primary touch located in the parietal lobe (in the post-central gyrus) Taking pain modulation - stop the connection into the nervous system. Two types of proprioceptors (no fast and slow receptors for this one)
