Adrenal glands produce androgens in both males and females. Ovaries produce estrogen and progesterone in females. Sex determined by the fertilizing sperm at the time of conception. Conception- combining of 23 pairs of chromosomes. 23rd contains the sex chromosomes (one from mother and one from father) Physical changes begin around 8-13 with breast development and rapid body growth. Occurs about two years later than girls. Begins about 10 to 11 years old. Any stimulus (including body contact) that leads to, enhances and maintains sexual arousal, and may lead to orgasm. Comes from both physical and psychological stimuli. Four phases typically characterize the sexual response cycle: Women: excitement phase, plateau phase, orgasmic phase (orgasm, refractory phase (males, resolution phase. Sexual dysfunction- disturbances in sexual desire, performance, or satisfaction. Men- up to 80% of erectile problems are due to physical factors, particularly vascular problems involving restriction of blood flow. Smoking affects blood flow in the genitals.
