Cable: real housewives of atlanta, teen mom, gold rush. Voyeurism: deriving pleasure from observing other people engaged in intimate acts. Broader interpretation: any intimate acts in another"s life, e. g. , tension in a relationship, experiencing emotional distress. Common motivations: habitual pass time, reality entertainment, social interaction, voyeurism, relaxation, companionship. Notable results: positive correlation between perceived realism of reality tv and affinity for reality tv. General effects: skews our perception of reality. Reality shows are heavily edited in a process called frankenbiting to create a desired outcome: reinforces stereotypes, self disclosure is rewarded and we mimic it. People on reality tv self disclose a lot of information. In response, viewers are more likely to self-disclose on social media: prompts us to engage in downward social comparison.
