Natural bias to like others who are attractive: aesthetic appeal. Humans like pretty things: halo effect at work. Attraction to those who we think can provide us the most social rewards. Assimilation effects occur when: pairing with attractive same-sex partner at the same time. When you hang out with attractive people, you become more attractive: pairing with opposite sex partner at the same time (applicable to male only) Males paired with attractive females are perceived as more attractive (not true for women with men) Contrast effects occur when: attractive partner appeals before the less attractive partner. Attractive person is seen and unattractive person comes in and the unattractive person looks even more unattractive. Similarity can be in terms of either: attitudinal similarity. We find people that share our opinions attractive: group membership similarity. Attracted to people who belong to the same groups or social organizations as us: personality similarity.
