Violence and Sexual Abuse Against Women
● WHO estimates approximately 50% of women worldwide have
been abused physically by a partner
○ Out of every 100 women number likely to have
experienced physical and sexual violence
■ US: 30, Europe: 25, Africa: 37, Middle East: 37,
Asia-Pacific: 25 and Southeast Asia: 35
● 1 in 4 women experience domestic violence, 1 in 3 young US girls
are victims, 15 million kids are exposed to violence
○ 92% of homeless women experience physical or sexual
violence
● 1 in 4 American girls experience unwanted sexual experiences
○ At UO, 1 in 5 females are sexually assaulted in college
● PTSD effects 2 out of 3 of those who experience domestic violence
○ 42% more likely to have life-threatening injuries, 38% of
murdered women committed by intimate partner
● 2x more likely to experience depression and 4x more likely to
commit suicide
○ 16% more likely to deliver low birth weight baby
● 37% will abuse their own children, 1.5x to contract HIV and 2x
more likely to contract other lethal STD;s
○ Increased drug and alcohol dependence, major depression,
and general anxiety disorder
