PSY 305 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Eyewitness Testimony, John Mcgeoch, Free Recall
Document Summary
Participants performed one of two study tests. They were then tested using two different types of tests. Recognition performance was better following meaning task. Rhyme performance was better following rhyming task. Critical factor is the match between processing at study and processing at test. Encoding is effective to the extent that it is consistent with retrieval. Not a matter of more or less memory per se. Need to reactivate particular encoded attributes at retrieval. The process by which we lose information (typically over time) Forgetting of information over time (regardless of time scale) follows a curve. Neurophysiological process presumed to be necessary after study if memory is to be solidified into a relatively permanent form. After presentation memories need time to solidify. Disruption of the consolidation processes leads to degraded representations. If mental inactivity (lack of disruption) is critical to consolidation, then going to sleep immediately after learning should help.
