Quiz Review:
1. Right primary visual cortex → highest acuity?
a. Left side, center of eye (not peripheral, less acuity)
2. The auditory cortex follows the principle of contralateral control. Thus the,
a. Right temporal lobe receives most of its input from the left ear
3. Mike has damage to his frontal cortex. He is likely to experience problems with which set
of behaviors
a. Complex thought, judgement, and reasoning
4. Which of the following is an advantage of synaptic transmission?
a. It allows neurons to compare multiple excitatory and inhibitory signals from many
sources
5. We are confident that the articulatory loop exists as a component of the working memory
system because
a. Behavioral manipulations, like articulatory suppression, suggest it is a distinct

The Visual System
The structure of the eye is designed to project a sharp image onto the retina, the
light-sensitive tissue that lines the back of the eye
Light comes in from the pupil, detracted by the lense, falls on the retina in the back of the
eye
Representations on the retina are upside down and laterally inverted
Lot of crossover between the eyes, both eyes represent central vision
Photoreceptors: Rods and Cones -- receptor cells in the retina, sensitive to light, carry
out photo-transduction
Each eye contains about 120 million rods and about 6.5 million cones
Local circuitry: Light → optic nerve → ganglion cell → amacrine cell → bipolar cell →
horizontal cell → rods and cones → back of the eye
Rods and cones change shape when light falls on them (they have a protein in them
called opsin & retinal)
Photoexcitation, isomerization
Only takes a single photon of light to isomerize!
Only takes 7 excited receptors to see!
